PhD in intercultural Communications

Hello,

I am really interested in studying for a PhD in intercultural or cross-cultural communications in the United States. I already have a BA in international communications and an MA in cultural studies. If any of you here could provide me with a list of universities that offer PhD programs in this area it will be very much appreciated!! Thanks a lot!

Amanda

Intercutural Communication_I need your opinion

Hello!

I am currently getting a Masters in Developmental Psychology. For a very long time I am fascinated with other cultures, and I would like to specialize in intercultural communication. My idea is to specialize in one or two regions (here I have in mind Singapore and Malaysia and/or Romania) and conduct cross-cultural communication workshops to a target population I have yet to determine- I am thinking something geared towards mental health personnel, although I am flexible with this. Ideally, I would like to integrate my background in Psychology with my interest in other cultures. I am also interested in research and I have research experience pertaining to psychology. I was wondering if you could guide me as to what program I should apply to given that I am in the process of getting my Masters in Psychology. I am not sure to what extent it would be indicated to apply for a Masters in Intercultural Communication or if to go for a PhD program. I would eventually like to get my PhD. What are some programs that you recommend? Should I seek employment in the field prior to applying? Or is this not a must? Thank you.

Cultural Imperialism in the Media.. seeking opinions

Hi all,

I am new on this site but it caught my attention as I am doing research on topics on culture, specifically on the theory of Cultural Imperialism in the media. The arguement here is that the Western, more powerful, nations use media to impose their culture, on indiginous and developing societies in the world. thereby changing cultures of others.

I would like to get different perspectives on the above topic from peoples from other countries, both developed and developing. If you have anything to contribute, I would really appreciate it. Your comments would help me better understand the issues involved, and the different contexts from which others stand.

Intercultural Undergraduate Seeking Advice

Hello All.

I am a rising senior undergraduate student in intercultural communication. This fall, I will make final decisions regarding my transition to a graduate program in ICC. I am strongly invested in the discipline and have had no second thoughts about pursuing a higher degree. However, as I prepare for this big step, I find myself questioning what I will be able to do with an advanced degree in the discipline.

Originally, I believed I would like to use my advanced degree to conduct ICC research and teach at the university level. After completing a theory-laden senior thesis project this summer (and barely remaining composed throughout), I have reservations as to whether I would like to continue on that path. This difficult project has led me to believe that I would be better suited for an intercultural communications career with a more applied, less research-based focus.

Where to study for an MA in Intercultural Communication?

An IU member (Gareth) posted the following on his blog. I'd like to start a discussion on this topic in the IU Forums, so I 've copied Gareth's post below. (The blog post was deleted, so as not to be repetitive ). I'll offer some advice here in the forum, but, please, others can jump in also with advice.

======

"Dear Mr Hart, My name is Gareth, and I am writing to you regarding advice about MA Intercultural Communications courses. At present I am an EFL teacher and have been so for the last two and a half years, which has led to my interest in Intercultural Communications and the possibility of studying it academically. Through on-line research I have found around 8 or 9 Universities globally that offer this qualification. Some stand out more than others, but my dilemma is that I have no way of ascertaining whether I am making the right choice as I have very little knowledge within this area of academia, and feel that professional assistance would be of great benefit. During my research I have come across interculturalrelations.com and have read with interest the insightful information it contains, but couldn't seem to find much in the way of information on MA's which I am sure a web-based organisation of your stature would possess, or if not, would know someone or somewhere that does. So I was wondering (if it's no trouble) whether you could send me a list of all Universities world-wide that offer this qualification or similar, and if possible highlight the courses which are of special note due to high standards etc. This would be very much appreciated, and would help me get a much clearer picture of the direction I should take. Sincerely Gareth Jones."
