Where to study for an MA in Intercultural Communication?

Grad School > General

An IU member (Gareth) posted the following on his blog.  I'd like to start a discussion on this topic in the IU Forums, so I 've copied Gareth's post below.  (The blog post was deleted, so as not to be repetitive ).  I'll offer some advice here in the forum, but, please, others can jump in also with advice.

"Dear Mr Hart, My name is Gareth, and I am writing to you regarding advice about MA Intercultural Communications courses. At present I am an EFL teacher and have been so for the last two and a half years, which has led to my interest in Intercultural Communications and the possibility of studying it academically. Through on-line research I have found around 8 or 9 Universities globally that offer this qualification. Some stand out more than others, but my dilemma is that I have no way of ascertaining whether I am making the right choice as I have very little knowledge within this area of academia, and feel that professional assistance would be of great benefit. During my research I have come across interculturalrelations.com and have read with interest the insightful information it contains, but couldn't seem to find much in the way of information on MA's which I am sure a web-based organisation of your stature would possess, or if not, would know someone or somewhere that does. So I was wondering (if it's no trouble) whether you could send me a list of all Universities world-wide that offer this qualification or similar, and if possible highlight the courses which are of special note due to high standards etc. This would be very much appreciated, and would help me get a much clearer picture of the direction I should take. Sincerely Gareth Jones."

destination and how to get there

Hi Gareth,

To best answer your questions let's start at the beginning.  It would be helpful to know what you want to do with your degree?  If we know your planned destination, then we can best plan how to get there.  The MA is a path/the journey, not the desitination.

There is an Executive

There is an Executive Master, i.e. a 60 ECTS degree designed for professionals, on Intercultural Communication at the University of Lugano in Switzerland. You can check its webpage at http://www.mic.unisi.ch/ Manuel Mauri Brusa PhD student in Intercultural Communication

On a personal note...

Gareth,

My story is similar.  My interest in Intercultural Communication/Relations began for the most part while I was teaching English in China.  When I came back to the States I went on for an M.A. in International Communication at American University in D.C. and then on to a Ph.D. in Intercultural Communication at the University of New Mexico.

How to get a scholarship

Hi Mr Hart,

I am a new member of IU. As you may know that at the moment in my contry, Indonesia, there were so many conflicts between entics or sub groups.
I really want to give contribution how to solve the problem from intercultural communication perspective. If you have any information about a phD scholarship, this will help me. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards,

Syam.-

In What Country Do You Want to Study Intercultural Relations?

Hi Syam.-

Glad that you are a member.  One of the main purposes of IU is to help students or prospective students who have an interest in intercultural relations.

Where would you like to study intercultural relations?  U.S., Australia, Europe, other?  I think this would be a good first question to answer and then we can go forward from there.

Also, I'd be interested in hearing more about the inter-ethnic conflicts in Indonesia from your perspective.  I'll do some reading of the more recent news to help educate myself a little more.   Maybe you could post some comments about the conflicts in the IU Forums?

MA in Intercultural Communication - best courses & universities?

Dear Mr Hart

I am in a similar siuation to Gareth in the sense that I have been researching where to study for a masters degree in Intercultural Communication and my interest in this area came from teaching English in Asia and Europe.  There seems to be an excellent course at Sheffield University in the UK (where I would spend part of my course time studying a language - I would choose Japanese).  However, I think it would be preferable for me to study abroad, given the nature of the masters course that I'm interested in and the fact that I would like this to lead to me working abroad once more.  Can you recommend any other universities/university courses, ideally in Europe, Australia or America?  Also, could you give me some more information about the typical fields of work that this kind of masters leads students into? Thank you very much for your help, Alexa Spiller

Was this question ever answered?

I came upon this site while looking into an MA of my own, as I have the exact same inquiry as Gareth did, as well as a similar background (except I teach ESL).

To answer Dr. Hart's original question to Gareth, I am interested in language studies and instruction, but would like to be able to pursue a career in corporate immersion programs.  Ideally, I'm looking for a curriculum that will offer some Linguistics training, but will provide a broader field of work.  I found an interesting program at the UAB (University of Barcelona), but ironically, it specializes in ESL instruction; being a native Spanish speaker, I would prefer a more general approach to language teaching in general.

Thank you in advance,

Alicia Navarrete A.
