Below is a listing of 50+ interculturally-themed shows and movies on U.S. television this week, anything from comedies, to crime dramas, to documentaries.

Here are my suggested must-sees*

  • 'Sharp Talk with Al Sharpton' -- At a barbershop in Brooklyn, Sharpton and his guests discuss a recent recreation of a 1941 experiment in which children responded to black and white dolls.
  • 'Black Men Revealed' --  Is it right to date outside one's own race?
  • 'Dr. Phil'  --  Dr. Phil takes on prejudice.
  • 'MI-5' --  Tom and Helen go undercover to stop a man from murdering immigrants and trying to start a race war.

New Feature Added to Intercultural U

A new page has been added to the IU Library.  We've added a page to help intercultural relations graduate students with their theses and dissertations.  For now, the page includes excerpts from R. Murray Thomas and Dale L. Brubaker's book titled Theses and Dissertations: A Guide to Planning, Research, and Writing.  Check out this and other information by clicking on "Theses/Dissertation" under "Library" in the Navigation bar to the left.

New Intercultural Books and Movies @ the IU Bookstore

New intercultural books and movies available in the IU Bookstore include Education for Intercultural Citizenship, A Cultural Approach to Interpersonal Communication and Olivia Ball and Paul Gready's No-Nonsense Guide to Human Rights.  In their new book Ball and Gready specifically address the conflicts that can occur when universal human rights clashes with specific cultures.  New DVD's include Discovery Atlas: China Revealed and a 2 DVD set Alien Nation/Enemy Mine.  The Discovery Atlas series recently airing on U.S. television is a little different from other travel programs.  Whereas other travel programs tend to focus on the sights of a country, here in the Discovery Atlas series there is a focus on the people of a country.  The Alien Nation/Enemy Mine DVD set fits into a sub-genre of science fiction films -- the clash of cultures.  In Alien Nation a large group of previously enslaved aliens become citizens of the United States.  This is cop buddy movie - one cop a human and the other an alien.  Enemy Mine follows a similar theme.  Two enemies (one human and the other alien) are stranded together on a barren planet and must work together to survive.  Enemy Mine is based in part on the 1968 war movie Hell in the Pacific. If you are especially interested in the intercultural sub-genre of science fiction film, you might also want to see John Carpenter's Starman.
